Moderating Skills / Focus Group Training

Background

Designed for those with little or no experience, this course covers the basic skills and includes an opportunity for delegates to practise running part of a group, (which is videoed) with personal feedback and guidance.

Format

Usually a two-day programme which can be run either in your own offices/general venue (with video recording and playback equipment) or in a viewing studio.

Training Style

Highly interactive, and participative sessions, based on sound theory. Key theory explained in short lectures. Backed up with comprehensive workbook.

  • Principles of moderating, including the importance of gathering relevant information, and respondent perspectives.
  • Active listening skills.
    • Asking good questions.
    • Probing and other eliciting skills.
  • Managing group dynamics.
    • The role(s) of the moderator.
    • Managing the process of a group.
    • Including everyone in the discussion.
    • Dealing with dominant and quiet respondents.
  • Brief introduction to more advanced techniques.
  • Devising and using stimulus material.
  • Developing a discussion guide.
  • Moderating exercise (includes opportunities for all delegates to moderate and to experience being a respondent) - video.
  • Feedback on moderating exercise.
  • Insights into personal style and skill development priorities.
